Santo Domingo, September 2023 – The Instituto Cultural Domínico Americano (ICDA) marked an important milestone in its history of more than 76 years by inaugurating a modern sports and recreational complex at its main campus on Abraham Lincoln Avenue in Santo Domingo.
The inauguration event was led by Mr. Dario Lama, President of the Board of Directors, and Mr. Ramon Sosa, Executive Director of ICDA, and was attended by members of its educational and cultural community, including parents, students, faculty and staff.
With more than 2,000 square meters of construction, the Domínico Americano Sports Complex is a versatile space that has a capacity to accommodate more than 1,500 people in ceremonial events and over 250 attendees in sports activities. This complex is equipped with state-of-the-art technology suitable for sporting and recreational events, including courts and backboards approved by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) for grade 2 competitions.
A highlight of this sports complex is its commitment to sustainability. Solar panels have been installed to complement the renewable energy initiatives already implemented by the institution, underscoring its commitment to the responsible use of resources.
In an emotional moment during the inauguration, tribute was paid to Ing. José del Carmen Ariza, who was a member and president of the Board of Directors of the Instituto Cultural Domínico Americano from 1990 to 2019. In his honor, the sports complex bears his name, thus recognizing his valuable contribution to the institution.
In the agenda of the event, the sports teams of the Domínico Americano School were also presented, accompanied by the cheerleaders who will fill with energy every game and activity in which our talented athletes participate. It was also a special moment when the sports mascot was unveiled: the “Cougar”, who personifies intelligence, talent, honor, leadership, intuition and the spirit of Domínico Americano.
The Domínico Americano Sports Complex will be the stage for a variety of sports disciplines, including basketball, volleyball and soccer, and will be open to the entire community that is part of the institution’s academic programs, which include the Universidad Domínico Americano (UNICDA), the Domínico Americano School & Preschool and the Language School. The objective is to enrich the training and athletic development of the students.
In addition to serving the ICDA’s educational community, the sports complex plans to offer activities for the external community, such as sports tournaments and exchanges, e-sports events, trainings and talks with renowned athletes, among other initiatives.
The Domínico Americano Sports Complex joins a series of projects that the institution has undertaken in order to strengthen and complement its renowned and prestigious academic offerings for children, youth and adults. This new complex is a testament to the ICDA’s continued commitment to educational excellence and the well-being of the community.
